Yamaha is a musical instrument company founded in 1887. The company has sold millions of piano-related products and bands, as well as drums and sound systems. It popularized the electric guitar, synthesizer, and electronic organ. The first Yamaha U3-8 was made by KK Waraki, who named it "nyasashi" (no name). In 1916, the founder of FUJIWARA Co., Ltd., Mr. Katsusaburo Fujiwara patented his eponymous method for building pianos with metal strings to replace the traditional gut strings. This small but successful company would eventually merge with Nakato Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in 1929 to form Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd. in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka. In the 1930s, Yamaha expanded into a worldwide musical instrument company. In 1979, Yamaha bought Sequential Circuits and soon sold it to the US musical instrument manufacturer, Roland Corporation. In 1988 Yamaha's U2 series was introduced. Yamaha has been expanding its business from musical instruments into other sectors such as leisure sports and personal computers. Yamaha produces a wide range of products including pianos, keyboards, electric guitars and drums, brass instruments, violins and others. In 2003, the company was the third largest musical instrument manufacturer in the world behind Roland and Korg. Yamaha is a member of RIM Alliance, a collaboration between Yamaha, Roland and M-Audio to manufacture audio products under shared brand names. The brand name continues to be used on Yamaha hardware released since 2003, although all models carry "Roland" or "M-Audio" brand names. Yamaha Corporation has had an influence in some aspects of music, such as synthesizers and digital pianos; however, they do not manufacture electronic equipment itself. Their research and production facilities are located in Kanagawa Prefecture, Taito-ku (originally Ota), Tokyo (currently Shinjuku). Yamaha's principal competitors in the music industry include Korg, Roland Corporation, Fender, Peavey Electronics Corporation, Kawai Musical Instruments Corporation (KMC), and Casio (via Roland). Yamaha Motor Company was established in 1955 to produce motorcycles. The company introduced two-wheeled vehicles to the US market in 1963 with the YA-1. With sales declining, the focus of Yamaha Motor shifted for several years to outboard marine engines (producing speed boats under the brand name of "SeaRay"). Yamaha has recently introduced its liquid cooling technology to the motorcycle market with the liquid-cooled Yamaha FZ-09.SOURCE: Yamaha Corporation Domestic Sales Report, Year Ending 31 Dec 2015 The founder of Yamaha, Mr. FUJIWARA was born in 1887 in Tokyo Japan.
